Why PayAdjust

Payroll should be the boring part of your startup

You registered the company, opened the bank account, and now someone needs paying. From this point you are an employer with HMRC obligations that do not scale down for being early: a PAYE scheme, an FPS every payday, pension auto-enrolment for eligible staff, payslips and P60s. None of it is hard, but all of it is easy to get wrong when nobody on the team has done it before.

PayAdjust is built so the person who draws the short straw can set it up in an afternoon and spend ten minutes a month on it after that. Pricing is a flat base plus a small amount per extra seat, so a hiring spree changes the bill in a way you can predict. And your team gets the payslip experience you would expect from a product company: a preview before payday, a live view of what a pension change does to take-home, and an AI advisor to answer the questions you would rather not field in Slack.

Pricing that scales with you

£15/month includes 10 people; each extra seat is £2/month. Thirty employees is a number you can put in a spreadsheet today and be right.

An employee experience that matches your product

Payslip preview before payday, pension changes with live tax impact, self-service P60s and holiday, and an AI advisor on every employee’s real numbers.

Founders’ payroll too

Directors’ National Insurance on the annual method, no-payment months handled with an EPS, and company car benefits payrolled when the time comes.

Set up in an afternoon

A setup checklist, employees who enter their own details, and an HMRC-recognised filing path from day one. No implementation project.

What you need

What a startup needs from payroll that a spreadsheet cannot do

Early-stage payroll is usually a spreadsheet and a founder’s evening. These are the things that break first.

  • 01

Correct tax and NI from day one

Every tax code, every NI category, student loans and postgraduate loans, calculated with the current year’s rates and reported correctly on the FPS.

  • 02

    Pension auto-enrolment as you hire

Each new starter is assessed automatically. Eligible staff are enrolled, opt-outs are tracked, and a contribution schedule is produced for your provider every month.

  • 03

    Starters and leavers without drama

Starter declarations and P45 figures captured on invite; leaver dates produce a P45 and the right FPS entries. Pro-rata for mid-month joiners is automatic.

  • 04

    Salary changes at scale

Bulk salary updates by percentage or amount, with a change history and automatic notifications to the employees affected.

  • 05

HMRC filing nobody has to remember

FPS in one click at the end of a run; EPS for Employment Allowance, no-payment months and statutory recovery. The calendar shows every deadline.

  • 06

Holiday, expenses and overtime in one place

Employees request holiday, claim expenses and log overtime from their portal. Approvals land on the right payslip.

  • 07

    Numbers for the board deck

Headcount trend, payroll cost over time, department breakdown and total employer cost, exportable as CSV for your finance model.

How it works

Four steps, once a month

  1. Step 01

    Add your team

Invite employees by email. They fill in their own address, NI number and bank details, so you never chase a form.

  2. Step 02

    Run payroll

Create the month and every payslip is calculated: PAYE, National Insurance, pension, student loans and statutory pay.

  3. Step 03

    Let employees check it

Release payslips for preview. Employees see their pay before payday and can adjust pension contributions with live tax impact.

  4. Step 04

    Approve and file

Approve the run, file the FPS with HMRC in one click, download the BACS file and pension schedule. Done until next month.

The guide

When a startup needs to start running payroll

The moment the company pays anyone a salary, including a founder, it needs a PAYE scheme and must report each payment to HMRC on or before the day it is paid. Register as an employer on GOV.UK before the first payday; HMRC posts your PAYE and Accounts Office references, which can take a couple of weeks. Auto-enrolment duties begin on the day your first employee starts.

Founders paying themselves

Founder-directors are usually paid a modest salary with the balance taken as dividends once the company is profitable. Salary goes through payroll; dividends do not. Directors’ National Insurance is worked out on an annual basis rather than month by month, which PayAdjust applies automatically when you mark someone as a director. See payroll software for limited company directors for the detail, and talk to your accountant about the right salary for the year.

What changes at 10, 25 and 50 employees

Past ten employees you move beyond the included seats and start paying £2/month per person, which is also around when a spreadsheet stops being viable. At twenty-five you will have had your first maternity leave, your first leaver and your first tax code change from HMRC, and you will want statutory pay from dates and a P45 that produces itself. At fifty you need reporting, an audit trail that a finance lead can rely on, and an employee portal that keeps a growing team out of your inbox. PayAdjust is built for the whole of that range and designed for employers up to around a hundred people.

What PayAdjust does not do

Share options and EMI schemes are not payroll features; use your cap table tool and an accountant. We do not pay contractors or international employees; PayAdjust is UK PAYE only. There is no HRIS, applicant tracking or performance review module, and no direct integration with accounting software beyond CSV exports. If you need payroll bundled with HR for a hundred-plus team, you are looking at a different category of product.
